My Ultimate Travel Experience ‘Down Under’!

My Ultimate Travel Experience ‘Down Under’

For the longest time, I had a deep desire to travel to Australia, but I hesitated to take the leap and book a flight. It wasn’t until I began studying Tourism Management in Belgium and had the chance to apply for an internship at Ultimate Travel in Sydney that everything fell into place.

The moment I learned about this opportunity, my excitement soared because it served as the perfect catalyst for embarking on my travel adventure “down under”! Although it took me some time to fully grasp the fact that I would be away for an entire year, the reality sunk in when I finally booked my flight and received approval for my visa. Naturally, I had moments of doubt, questioning whether the internship would live up to my expectations or if I would struggle to make friends. However, once I pushed past those uncertainties, I found myself overcome with anticipation, eagerly counting down the days until my departure.

“As I delved into my trip planning, I found myself swayed by every captivating picture I stumbled upon. Each beautiful beach or awe-inspiring view of the outback sparked a desire to add it to my ever-growing bucket list. To visualize my aspirations, I purchased a giant plastic map of Australia and proudly displayed it in my room. With each passing day, I eagerly marked circles around the places I longed to explore, until the map was nearly covered in a sea of black ink.”

“They’ve become my family here and I made friends for life!”

After enduring a long but comfortable flight, I finally arrived in Sydney. Thanks to the impeccable organization of Ultimate, I had no worries about accommodation or transportation upon my arrival. When I met the incredible team at the company, I instantly felt a warm sense of belonging. Now, after nearly three months, they have become my chosen family here, and I have forged friendships that will last a lifetime. I have yet to experience a dull moment or feel a sense of loneliness since I arrived. Each day brings new adventures and unexpected surprises, making every moment unique. This is one of the greatest joys of being a solo traveler.

Working with everyone at Ultimate is an absolute pleasure. I am not treated as just an intern, but as a valued colleague, which makes my work experience all the more enjoyable. The thought of eventually bidding farewell fills me with sadness, as I am notoriously bad at goodbyes. However, I take solace in knowing that they will support me in all my future endeavors.

The initial challenge I faced upon arrival was battling the dreaded jetlag during my first few days. I constantly battled fatigue and an overwhelming desire to sleep, but at the same time, I was eager to explore the vibrant city. Once I managed to overcome this hurdle, my journey took a turn for the incredible.

In addition to my internship, I had the opportunity to work as a tour guide, accompanying Ultimate groups on various adventures throughout Sydney. Some of the highlights included embarking on a memorable Sydney Harbour cruise and venturing to Port Stephens for an unforgettable excursion. At Basecamp, I had the pleasure of interacting with a friendly kangaroo, indulging in the exhilarating experience of sandboarding, and savoring the breathtaking scenery and pristine beaches during our leisure time. The perfect conclusion to our time at Basecamp was a dolphin cruise, which left me in awe of the sheer beauty of nature.

“These are all memories I’ll keep forever.”

The memories of my first beach walk from Coogee to Bondi are still vivid in my mind. The weather was perfect, and the breathtaking views left me in awe. It was a moment of pure amazement, just like my experience exploring the stunning Blue Mountains. Australia truly is a country of remarkable beauty and diversity, offering something for everyone.

One of the absolute highlights of my time here was joining Surf Camp. Learning how to surf is an essential part of the Australian lifestyle, and it made me feel like a local. Living so close to the beach, surfing becomes ingrained in their everyday lives.

Initially, I planned to find a travel buddy and purchase a van to explore the country on my own. However, I soon discovered that Ultimate Travel offers an array of incredible trips to the exact places I wanted to visit. The best part is that these trips are in groups, making it even easier to connect with like-minded travelers. Instead of booking my travel plans in advance, I decided to keep an open mind upon arrival, allowing me the freedom to change my mind about my itinerary every day. That’s what I love most about traveling—the sense of adventure and spontaneity it brings.

Among the top destinations on my Australian bucket list are the Whitsunday Islands, Fraser Island, and Ayers Rock. Exploring the vastness of the Outback and embarking on a thrilling drive along the Great Ocean Road are experiences I eagerly anticipate. Immersing myself in the Aboriginal community and learning about Australian wildlife are also high on my list. I dream of kayaking alongside dolphins, cuddling a koala, skydiving at Mission Beach, and diving into the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. I know that I’ll meet incredible people along the way who will make these adventures even more memorable.

As my time in Sydney draws to a close, I understand the importance of having a plan for my onward journey. Fortunately, my amazing colleagues have extensive travel experience in Australia, and I can rely on their invaluable tips and advice to shape my future adventures. With their guidance, I’m confident that I’ll create a fantastic itinerary that ensures every moment of my Australian journey is unforgettable.

Cheers, Jana 🙂
