Learn To Surf On Your Aussie Gap Year

Learn to Surf on Your Aussie Gap Year!

Around 4 months ago, the idea of surfing seemed completely foreign to me. I had never even touched a surfboard before. Fast forward to today, and I find myself hitting the waves at least twice a week, completely in love with the sport! Learning to surf during your Australian gap year is an absolute must. It’s not just a hobby; it’s an experience that will introduce you to a vibrant community, allow you to explore breathtaking beaches, and create lifelong memories.

Hi there! My name is Bernie, and I embarked on my Australian adventure four months ago with a working holiday visa in hand. Being someone who thrives on adventure (skating, skiing, BMX), learning to surf was a top priority on my bucket list. Just two weeks after arriving in Oz, I grabbed a surfboard and dove headfirst into this exhilarating sport. And let me tell you, I haven’t looked back since. In all my surfing endeavors, I’ve never encountered a shark, but I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the waves with playful dolphins! When it comes to learning to surf, finding the right location and having the right support can make all the difference. You can either jump in headfirst (quite literally!) or opt for some lessons to get you started. Allow me to share four of my favorite spots for learning to surf!

4 Great Beginner Surfing Beaches in or Around Sydney

7 Mile Beach

Located a couple of hours south of Sydney in Gerroa, 7 Mile Beach offers the perfect learning environment for budding surfers. With a whopping 7 miles of beach to explore, you’ll have plenty of space to practice and have fun in the water. Keep your eyes peeled, as you might even have the chance to spot some friendly dolphins while riding the waves. If you’re looking for a comprehensive surfing experience, Surf Camp Australia is based here, offering incredible 2 or 5-night packages. From transportation and accommodation to delicious meals and surf lessons, everything is taken care of, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the surf, eat, sleep, and repeat lifestyle. Ah, Bondi Beach, the iconic gem of Sydney. Known worldwide for its vibrant atmosphere, Bondi is not only a fantastic place to soak up the sun but also a great spot for learning to surf. You can rent a board and dive right in, testing your skills in the famous Bondi waves. If you prefer some guidance, consider taking a few surf lessons to get started on the right foot. Our Sydney Gap Year program is a fantastic option if you’re eager to kickstart your surfing journey at Bondi. So grab your board, ride the waves, and experience the thrill of surfing in one of Australia’s most famous coastal hotspots!

Maroubra Beach

Just a few beaches south of Bondi, Maroubra Beach is a hidden gem nestled below Coogee. Known for its incredible waves, Maroubra is a favorite among local surf enthusiasts. While it may not be as crowded as Bondi, it still attracts its fair share of surfers. However, you’ll find a bit more space here to enjoy the waves and work on your skills. So grab your board and head to Maroubra Beach for an exhilarating surf experience.

Garie Beach

Situated in the Royal National Park, Garie Beach is a picturesque gem located just over an hour’s drive south of Sydney. The journey to Garie Beach offers breathtaking views of the national park and its surrounding natural beauty. This beach is a popular spot for Aussies, and you’re likely to encounter some laid-back individuals living out of their cars with a surfboard in tow. Despite its popularity, Garie Beach remains relatively quiet even on busy days, providing ample space for you to paddle in the water and catch some waves. With over a kilometer of beach to explore, Garie Beach is a perfect destination for a serene and enjoyable surf session.

So there you have it, my top four picks for beginner surfers in and around Sydney! Learning to surf during your Aussie gap year is an incredible experience. Don’t hesitate, just jump right in and give it a try, and before you know it, you’ll be having a blast in the waves. And always remember, the ultimate surfer is the one who is enjoying the most!

I haven’t had the chance to explore North Sydney yet, so I apologize if I missed any hidden gems there! Let me know in the comments below if there are any great spots that I should check out.
