5 Reasons Why You Need To Visit Fraser Island!

5 Reasons Why You Need To Visit Fraser Island

Why you should visit Fraser Island

When I left Sweden to embark on my Australian adventure, I had heard so much about Fraser Island that my expectations were sky-high. And let me tell you, it absolutely lived up to the hype!

While I loved every place I visited in Australia, my time on Fraser Island stands out as one of the absolute highlights. Here’s why I believe that EVERYONE should include Fraser Island in their Aussie gap year.

Drive a 4WD on the world’s largest sand Island!

There are very few islands in the world where you can embark on a road trip, especially on the largest sand island. Exploring Fraser Island in a 4WD gives you the incredible freedom to discover its best spots. From its long stretches of white sandy beaches (basically its own highway!) to its lush rainforests and breathtaking freshwater lakes, Fraser Island has it all.

I opted for a group tour to explore Fraser Island, and it turned out to be the perfect choice for me. We took turns driving along the sandy beaches, blasting music, and getting to know other backpackers. It was like living the dream road trip! I will forever cherish the memories of driving through the sand with my group of six in the car, laughing uncontrollably. And the places we visited? They were simply awe-inspiring.

In our group, only four of us had a driver’s license, which meant more driving time for us (lucky me!). But let me tell you, even those without a license had a fantastic time. They relaxed in the back, sipping beer and goon, and taking in the breathtaking views. It was a pretty great alternative, if you ask me!

For two incredible days, we followed our tour leader as our convoy of 4WDs explored the island, making stops at the most picturesque spots on Fraser Island. It was like being in paradise, surrounded by beauty at every turn.

Fraser Island is a place that will leave you in awe and create memories that will last a lifetime. So, make sure to include it in your Aussie gap year itinerary – you won’t regret it!

Champagne Pools – Fraser Islands natural ocean Jacuzzi

If you’re a water enthusiast, Fraser Island is an absolute paradise! This stunning island is home to over 100 freshwater lakes where you can enjoy a refreshing swim. When I planned my trip to Fraser, I knew there were some incredible freshwater spots, but little did I know that there was one particular place where I could take a dip, aptly named after my favorite bubbly drink – Champagne!

The Champagne Pools are a true gem on Fraser Island. Picture yourself sitting in these natural rock pools, relaxing and marveling at the waves crashing over the rocks, creating a frothy and effervescent foam. It’s no wonder they earned the name Champagne Pools! Once you experience this incredible spot, you’ll raise a glass in celebration of Fraser Island’s very own Champagne Jacuzzi!

Three Words: Crystal Clear Lakes

When it comes to swimming in lakes, you might envision murky waters with unknown creatures lurking beneath the surface. But let me tell you, Lake McKenzie is a whole different story!

Nestled atop the sand dunes and surrounded by lush rainforest, Fraser Island’s freshwater lakes are a sight to behold. Among all the lakes, Lake McKenzie is not only my personal favorite, but also a favorite of many. And once you see pictures of it, you’ll understand why!

I challenge you to find a more unique and stunning lake than Lake McKenzie. It truly is incredible. During our visit, our tour guide suggested something unconventional – he encouraged us to brush our teeth and scrub our bodies with the pure white silica sand that lines the lake’s shores. The sand acts as a natural exfoliator and even offers a teeth-whitening effect. It was like having a spa experience in the midst of an island adventure!

Another highlight is Eli Creek, the largest freshwater creek on the island’s eastern coast. It’s a place of unparalleled beauty, with breathtaking shades of blues and greens that transport you to a tropical paradise. Eli Creek is perfect for swimming, but it’s especially ideal for those who prefer a more leisurely approach. The gentle water flow carries you downstream, allowing you to relax and soak up the beauty of the azure waters, white sands, and stunning nature that surrounds you.

Camping – “what’s happens when you camp on Fraser Island, stays on Fraser Island”

Fraser Island is an incredible destination for camping, especially if you’re traveling with a lively group of fellow backpackers like I was. We set up our tents in a spacious camping area and spent two unforgettable nights there. The best part of being in a big group is the opportunity to meet and bond with so many friendly and interesting people. I have to admit, some of the evenings are a bit hazy in my memory… I blame it on the sheer amount of fun and goon we had! 😉

During our Fraser Island adventure, the evenings were a blast. We gathered around the campfire to enjoy delicious dinners together, engaging in lively conversations, playing entertaining drinking games, and listening to a talented guy strumming his guitar. We danced, we sang, and we created memories that will last a lifetime. It was exactly as crazy and exciting as you can imagine!

If you prefer a bit more comfort during your stay, there are also fantastic tours available that provide resort accommodation for the evening. This way, you can still hang out with your newfound friends and have a great time on the island, all while enjoying a little extra comfort and convenience.

Meet the locals

Have you ever heard of the native ‘dog’ of Australia, the dingo? Dingoes are the well-known inhabitants of Fraser Island, and while they are fascinating creatures, it’s important to approach them with respect and caution. Unlike domestic dogs, dingoes are wild animals and can be potentially dangerous. So, no play fighting or rolling around in the sand with these pooches! When you encounter dingoes in their natural habitat on Fraser Island, it’s best to keep a safe distance and observe them from afar.

Fraser Island is home to a remarkable array of wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, emus, turtles, and various native bird species. One of the best spots to catch a glimpse of this diverse wildlife is Indian Heads, a lookout located at the northern end of the famous 75-mile-long Eastern surf beach. From this vantage point, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of Fraser Island’s stunning beach, and it’s also an excellent area for spotting wildlife. During my visit, I was fortunate to have clear weather, and I witnessed an incredible sight. I saw manta rays, sharks, dolphins, and turtles gracefully swimming in the crystal-clear waters below. It was truly an unforgettable travel moment, filled with awe and amazement!

Top secret…

The worst question you could ask me when I’m travelling? “What was the best thing during your travels in Australia?”

It’s the most difficult question to answer as every place/experience and moment has been unique but this time I hold my hands up and say: My best memory from travelling the East coast of Australia was definitely Fraser Island!

My last tip – Don’t forget to bring your waterproof/sand proof camera! You’ll need a sand-proof cam for fairly obvious reasons and even though you’re not likely to forget Fraser Island any time soon, I promise that the pics will come in handy when you try to explain to your friends and family how amazing it was! Anyway it’s time to set a new ‘like’ record on your Insta feed isn’t it?! 😉
